Using My Crystal Ball to Demystify the 2017 NHL Expansion Draft Rules.

Now that the Pittsburgh Penguins have won the Stanley Cup, it’s time to focus on the upcoming NHL expansion draft.  The Vegas Golden Knights will play their first pre-season game Sept. 17th, 2017. They have already selected George McPhee as the General Manager, Gerard Gallant as the Head Coach, and named the Chicago Wolves(AHL) and Quad City Mallards(ECHL).  They will select their roster of players on June 21st.  Here are the rules of the expansion draft:

Protection Lists

Each NHL team will be able to select one of two scenarios on how to protect their current players.  The first is 7 forwards, 3 defensemen, and 1 goalie.  The second is 8 total skaters (regardless of position) and 1 goalie.

*Players who currently have a “No Movement” clause must be protected and count towards their club’s protection numbers.

*All first and second-year players, and unsigned draft picks will not count towards their club’s protection numbers.

Player Exposure Requirements

All NHL teams must meet the following requirements in regards to players they place on the exposure lists.

*1 defenseman and 2 forwards who are under contract for the 2017-2018 season and played in 40 or more NHL games in the 2016-2017 season or played in 70 or more NHL games in the last two season.

*1 goalie who is under contract for the 2017-2018 season or will be a restricted free agent (RFA) at the end of the 2017-18 season. If a team chooses to make an RFA goaltender available, then he must receive a qualifying offer prior to the submission of the protection list.

*Players who have missed more than the last 60 consecutive games of the past season, or who have a career threatening injury, cannot be used to satisfy a team’s exposure requirements unless the player is approved by the NHL.

Vegas’ rules for the expansion draft

* Must select 1 player from each team (30 players) for a total of 14 forwards, 9 defensemen, and 3 goalies.

* 20 of the players selected must be under contract for the 17-18 season. These contracts must make up 60-100% of the prior seasons’ salary cap ceiling.

*Unable to buy out any player selected in the expansion draft until after the 17-18 season.

*Teams will submit their protection lists by 5 P.M. on Saturday, June 17th.

* Vegas will receive the protection lists at 10 A.M. on Sunday, June 18th (Happy Fathers Day)

*Vegas will submit their selections to the NHL by 10 A.M. on Wednesday, June 21st.
